How to make it

  1. Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into an old-fashioned glass over fresh ice.
  2. Express an orange twist over the drink and use it as garnish.

Tip: Stir with plenty of cold, hard ice for 20 to 30 seconds. You want it chilled and silky, not cloudy.

About the Mezcal Negroni

No single bartender claims the first one: the mezcal Negroni appeared in New York bars around 2009, as mezcal and the Negroni were both catching on. The smoky agave takes the place of gin in the equal-parts classic.

Missing something?

  • No Mezcal? Use Tequila (Loses the smoke; a drop of Islay scotch brings some back)
  • No Mezcal? Use Tequila Reposado (Loses the smoke)
  • No Campari? Use Aperol (Lighter, sweeter and less bitter)
  • No Sweet Vermouth? Use Punt e Mes (Noticeably more bitter)
