Ingredients

How to make it

  1. Add the tequila, tomato juice, orange juice, lime juice, grenadine and Tabasco to a shaker with a pinch of salt and a grind of black pepper.
  2. Shake with ice and strain into an ice-filled highball glass rimmed with salt.
  3. Garnish with a lime wedge.
  4. Street versions often top it with grapefruit soda.

Tip: Fill the shaker with ice and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds, until the tin is frosty.

About the Vampiro

Oscar Hernández, a fruit-stand vendor in San Luis Soyatlán, Jalisco, says he created it and sold it in plastic bags with a straw. Vampiro means vampire, after the blood-red colour of its sangrita-style mix.

Missing something?

  • No Tequila Reposado? Use Tequila (Brighter, less oak)
  • No Tequila Reposado? Use Tequila Añejo (More oak)
  • No Tomato Juice? Use Clamato (Adds a briny, savoury note)
  • No Orange Juice? Use Orange (Squeeze fresh: 1 orange gives about 70 ml)
  • No Orange Juice? Use Blood Orange Juice (Berry-like and deep red)
  • No Lime Juice? Use Lime (Squeeze fresh: 1 lime gives about 25 ml)
  • No Lime Juice? Use Lemon Juice (Softer, different aroma)
  • No Grenadine? Use Raspberry Syrup (Berry instead of pomegranate)
