How to make it

  1. Shake all ingredients hard with ice and strain into an old-fashioned glass over fresh ice.
  2. Garnish with a lemon wheel, or with fresh blackcurrants or blackberries when they are in season.

Tip: Fill the shaker with ice and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds, until the tin is frosty.

About the Bourbon Renewal

Jeffrey Morgenthaler published this whiskey sour sweetened partly with crème de cassis in 2004. He named it after a band his business partner had once played in, liking the name enough to build a drink around it.

Missing something?

  • No Bourbon? Use Jim Beam Bourbon (Jim Beam is a bourbon)
  • No Bourbon? Use Jack Daniels (Tennessee whiskey is made much like bourbon)
  • No Lemon Juice? Use Lemon (Squeeze fresh: 1 lemon gives about 30 ml)
  • No Lemon Juice? Use Lime Juice (Sharper, different aroma)
  • No Crème de Cassis? Use Crème de Mûre
  • No Crème de Cassis? Use Chambord
  • No Simple Syrup? Use Rich Simple Syrup (More concentrated, so use less)
  • No Simple Syrup? Use Sugar (1 tsp sugar is about 7.5 ml syrup; stir until dissolved)
  • No Angostura Bitters? Use Peychaud's Bitters (Lighter, with more anise)

All swaps for Bourbon, Lemon Juice, Crème de Cassis, Simple Syrup and Angostura Bitters
