How to make it
- Use cloudy, unsweetened apple juice (sold as apple cider in North America, not the alcoholic kind).
- Warm it in a saucepan with a cinnamon stick, 3 cloves and a star anise for 5-10 minutes without letting it boil.
- Pour the bourbon into a heatproof mug, strain the hot juice over it and stir.
- Garnish with a thin apple slice and a cinnamon stick.
Tip: Fill the glass right to the top with ice so the drink stays cold without watering down fast.
About the Spiked Hot Apple Cider
In the US and Canada, apple cider means fresh, unfiltered apple juice, which is why the fermented drink is called hard cider there. Mulled with spices and spiked with bourbon, it is a fixture of autumn and Halloween gatherings.
Missing something?
- No Bourbon? Use Jim Beam Bourbon (Jim Beam is a bourbon)
- No Bourbon? Use Jack Daniels (Tennessee whiskey is made much like bourbon)
