History
Port originated in the 17th century when British merchants fortified Douro wines with brandy to survive shipping. The style became distinctly Portuguese with protected origin status. Port houses often have British names reflecting this history.
How it’s made
Made by fermenting indigenous grapes and fortifying with grape spirit to stop fermentation, preserving sweetness. Ruby port ages briefly in large vessels; tawny ages longer in smaller barrels, developing oxidative character. Vintage and vintage-dated ports are premium categories.
